As Ramadan draws to a close, Muslims all over the world prepare to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr (also known as Eid al-Fitr).
What is Eid ul-Fitr?
Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of a month of fasting from dawn to sunset. Eid ul-Fitr is the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam, the other being Eid al-Adha (or Eid ul-Adha). Eid means ‘celebration’ or ‘festival’ and is a prestigious word in Islam, it refers to a time of joyous celebration.
When is Eid ul-Fitr?
Eid ul-Fitr takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic (lunar) calendar. This year Eid ul-Fitr will probably fall on Wednesday, April 10th.
Celebrating Eid ul-Fitr
Eid ul-Fitr is important because it follows one of the most sacred months of all: Ramadan. The Eid celebrations begin the morning after the new moon has been sighted. People wake up early and begin the day with greeting the family and performing Salah (prayers).
People often dress in new clothes to get ready for the day ahead. After this it’s time to sit down with family and friends for a shared breakfast. Eid Salah is then performed in congregation. The rest of the day is spent visiting family and friends and celebrating. The phrase “Eid Mubarak” is used to wish each other a blessed Eid.
